by Elizabeth Onusko

I count the raindrops falling

in a straight line extending from

the top of my head cloudward

and multiply that figure by

the sum total of my ancestors

who benefitted from

the evolutionary advantages

of functional depression

then divide by how young I was

when I was old enough to understand

the dark and subtract from that

each time this week I failed

to reconcile the fact of my loneliness

with my never being alone

and what I’m left with

is the temperature in Bratislava

tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

Poem from “Forklift, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking, & Light Industrial Safety” Double Issue #35-36. Fall 2017. Pg. 148-149.
