Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, or PEMF, has a long history and is backed by more than 2,000 university-level, double-blind, medical studies from many countries. PEMF also has tens of thousands of patient success stories for a wide range of maladies, including chronic pain, trauma, depression and anxiety, migraines, reversal of metabolic disorders, and more.
Even NASA found PEMF stimulated tissue growth and repair and moderated disease in a four-year study.
How does it work?
Dr. Elliott will place a plastic tube containing a magnetic coil on the affected area, or you lie on a PEMF mat. PEMF radiates a powerful, pulsed electromagnetic field. It doesn’t hurt, although you may feel some mild muscular contractions. Treatment usually lasts 15–20 minutes, with permanent success requiring several treatments over a period of time.
But wait, aren’t EMFs bad for you? EMF “smog” from cell phones, power lines, computers, and more are believed by many to worsen health. The PEMF uses specifically designed frequencies applied in a controlled manner, which has been proven to benefit health.

Why PEMF works so great on pain
These pulses cause chemical reactions at the cellular level by opening channels in the cell membranes. The cell membrane is the cell’s “brain.” It communicates with other cells, and regulates what comes in and goes out, including nutrients, hormones, signaling compounds, and toxins. The membrane has a positive charge on one side and a negative charge on the other.
Opposites attract, so it’s the constant electrical activity between these positively and negatively charged ions that open and closes passages in the membrane. This voltage difference between the ions on either side of the cell membrane is called the cell’s “resting potential.”
Chronic pain, disease, and damage decrease the resting potential, much like overuse drains the voltage of a battery. In the case of chronic pain, a low resting potential allows too many pain signals to enter the cell, promoting inflammation, damage, and ever-increasing levels of pain.
PEMF restores the membrane’s electrical balance. This “charging of the battery” blocks incoming pain signals, thus quickly reducing pain and inflammation. This same mechanism allows damaged cells to recover and repair. Repeat treatments (depending on your needs) provide lasting results.
PEMF reduces inflammation and promotes repair
PEMF also promotes healing through its actions on a signaling compound in the body called nitric oxide. There is a pro-inflammatory form of nitric oxide and two anti-inflammatory forms. Excess levels of the pro-inflammatory form cause chronic pain and many autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
Anti-inflammatory forms promote blood flow, oxygenation, growth and repair, and relaxation of blood and lymph vessels. Studies show PEMF promotes the anti-inflammatory forms of nitric oxide, thus promoting recovery and regeneration, and reducing inflammation.
PEMF repairs bones and tissue
PEMF enhances the repair of bones and tissue by increasing the flow of blood and lymph. The lymphatic system removes waste products and blood delivers oxygen and nutrients to the body’s tissues and organs. PEMF enhances these systems, stimulating the growth of new blood vessels and bone, and speeding repair and recovery from injuries and wounds.
PEMF slows aging
The resting potential of damaged and diseased cells is up to 80 percent lower than normal. This lowers metabolism and energy and makes the body more vulnerable to damage from disease-causing free radicals. PEMF raises the body’s supply of circulating electrons, thus serving as a potent antioxidant to boost cellular energy. PEMF’s antioxidant benefits, along with its proven ability to repair and regenerate tissue, make it a powerful anti-aging tool.
PEMF improves brain function
Studies show PEMF’s effect on the nervous system dramatically improves insomnia, reduces the damage from strokes, and improve symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis.
PEMF therapy—it's not just one machine
In office treatments are performed with the PEMF-100 machine that uses a field that can be felt as it pulses through your body. This more powerful application can have beneficial effects in a matter of 3-5 minutes. Home treatments are also an option thanks to our clinic rental program. The German-made MRS system is a lower intensity device that can be used for 30-45 minute sessions, up to three times per day. Hundreds of research studies with this machine have shown it to be effective for scores of clinical conditions.
Is PEMF safe?
PEMF is extremely safe and does not cause any side effects. To err on the side of caution, we use a finger pulse oximeter during treatment to monitor whether treatment may cause a rise in heart rate or affect tissue oxygenation.
What does PEMF cost?
For PEMF (Pulsed Magnetic Field Therapy) only visits: $55 per 30 min appointment. Initial visits for patients interested in PEMF only: $95.
For PEMF home rentals (MRS device): $400 for four weeks. If you decide to purchase a home machine, $200 of the rental fee will apply towards purchase.
